UN Commission on the
Status of Women Update:

Sharon Slater, PresidentDear #Salutation#,

As I mentioned in our action alert we sent just a few hours ago, things can move fast at these UN meetings, especially in the closing hours of negotiations.

It looks the problem we alerted you to on the Commission on Status of Women (CSW) final draft resolution on “HIV/AIDS and the Girl Child” that would have incorporated language calling for legalizing same-sex marriage worldwide, as well as a number of other anti-family provisions, was pulled before it was adopted just an hour or so ago.  We are still looking at footnotes in the document and other ways that these bad policies could be referenced and still incorporated but, as of now, it looks like we were successful in our 3 day blitz to deal with this potential problem.

Negotiations on the main CSW final document, which also includes problematic provisions, will continue (probably through the night again!) and we are working with friendly delegations on this document as well.

Thank you to all of you who were able to respond!  We will continue to face these kinds of problems and challenges in the months and years ahead, but on this one important battle, at least, it looks like we won.

I will be doing a final wrap up report on the CSW meeting next week.

Thanks again!

Sharon Slater
