3 Urgent Actions to Stop Online Sex Trafficking

February 26, 2018

SHARON SLATER,
FWI PRESIDENT

Dear Friend of the Family,

We URGENTLY need your help on critical votes coming up in the House of Representatives TOMORROW on measures that will help fight online sex trafficking and reduce sexual exploitation.

I have attached below an action alert from the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE), an outstanding group that Family Watch has partnered with for several years.  They are the sponsoring organization for the Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation, of which FWI is a member.

The attached alert briefly explains the measures being voted on and outlines actions we urge you to take.  Since time is so short, it is important to call your congressional representative as soon as possible. If you are not sure who that is, you can go to house.gov and enter your zip code in the box in the top right hand corner.

Also, the Capitol switchboard operates 24 hours a day so you can call after business hours and leave a short message on your representative’s office voice mail.  Be sure to identify yourself as a constituent.

This is one of the best opportunities we have had in years to fight sexual exploitation so please call as soon as possible.

Also, please forward this on to everyone you know who might also help fight sexual exploitation online.

Thank you for whatever you can do to help!

Sharon Slater

URGENT ACTIONS TO FIGHT ONLINE SEX TRAFFICKING

Dear Sharon,

We urgently need your help.

Tomorrow the House of Representatives will vote on important legislation to amend the   Communications Decency Act (CDA)

.

As we have said before, in our view this is the most important legislative initiative on sex trafficking since the passage of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act in 2000.   Unless the CDA is amended, sex trafficking websites will remain immune from any liability.

It’s crunch time and we must continue to put the pressure on members.   Therefore, we need you to call your member’s office over the next 24 hours and to tweet!

We know some people are intimidated to make calls to their Representatives because they feel they need to be experts. The reality is that the people answering the phones are most likely interns who know as much as (or less than) the person making the call.

The only thing the Member offices keep track of is whether or not the calls are for or against the bill.

House Switch Board:    202 225-3121

You will be transferred to your Member’s office.

Calling Script:

My name is _____________ and I live in Representative __(Name)__________  Congressional District.

I am calling to express my strong support for H.R. 1865 – Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act of 2017 also known as the FOSTA-SESTA legislation.

I would also like to Representative _______(Name)_______ to support the amendment being offered by Representative Mimi Walters that will provide survivors and state and local law enforce with the legal tools to go after websites that are knowingly facilitating human trafficking and oppose any other amendment.

It is very important that both bills be referenced as they are part of a package. Without the Walters’ Amendment, the CDA reforms will not be included. Also, these calls should be made today or tomorrow morning at the latest. Please take a few minutes out of your day to make certain your U.S. Representative knows that it’s time to restore rights to victims of sex trafficking, rather than maintaining immunity for the kingpins of sex trafficking.
